A Young Male Requires Counseling For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Dependency

Approximately eight months ago I had breakfast with a thirty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from extreme depression, has relationship issues, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As articulated by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his endless relationship problems.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he basically has no reason to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed one semester of grad school in Spanish history.

Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an example of an individual who can look in the mirror and see his chemical dependency and drinking problems and do something positive about these problems. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol treatment that results in long-term recovery.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are quite a few recently created doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is completely nothing constructive about drug addiction and excessive and abusive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the map to poor work and school performance, a premature death, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, shattered relationships, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him cope with these psychological difficulties more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the determination to achieve much of anything in his life, it is evident that he desperately needs a little hope for a healthier lifestyle. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he requires for his severe depression and dependency and continue with his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is simply too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol via drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the treatment he needs for his severe depression, he can turn his life around and start living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.

More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and beneficial change are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the medical treatment he needs, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in a healthy and sober manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his life.
