Richard had an awfully difficult time keeping a job. As a matter of fact, due to his sluggishness and lack of motivation, he was out of work far more frequently than he was in a state of employment. And when he did get employment, he had an awfully difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he regularly received less than optimal performance evaluations, and he called off sick so consistently that he commonly got fired four or five weeks after he began working.

To no one's wonder, one of the results of Richard's disgraceful employment record was the fact that he was without much money almost on an everyday basis. In spite of Richard's unacceptable employment track record and financial negligence, then again, one way or another he made it his business to drink in an excessive manner on an everyday basis.

So it came as no big surprise when Richard got arrested for a fourth DWI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related actions was deplorable and, as a consequence, he was going to sentence Richard to serve twelve months in the municipal jail.

During his time in the city jail, Richard was expected to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the harmful consequences of hazardous and abusive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol treatment. The magistrate underlined the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol counseling and learns how to live a life of abstinence, he will probably be spending more than a short amount of time incarcerated in jail.

Richard articulated that he grasped what the magistrate was proclaiming but he still stated that incarceration was not the correct sentence. The magistrate thought otherwise and declared that it was his professional duty to keep alcohol addicted individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who get arrested for one or more DUIs. To authenticate this statement, the judge outlined some respected, thoroughly evaluated alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction statistics that underscored some of the unhealthy outcomes that are associated with hazardous and abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Even though Richard comprehended that he drank in a hazardous and abusive manner, he never felt that he was an alcohol dependent individual. So it was a big bombshell when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism signs and symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms roughly three hours after after getting locked up in the city jail.

To deal with his symptoms of alcohol withdrawal in a harm free manner, Richard was taken by ambulance to an alcohol rehabilitation hospital for alcohol detox and then returned to the local jail. While behind bars Richard undertook alcohol therapy but since he received this counseling as something that was imposed upon him, he did not take ownership of his careless drinking.

When his time in the city jail was completed, the magistrate without hesitation announced to Richard that he would be under careful observation and would be mandated to take random urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard did not take ownership of his drinking problem and how he grudgingly followed the rehab policy and procedures while in the municipal jail, the magistrate knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and hazardous drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "get it" and discover how to live in a responsible and accountable manner.
