Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Alcohol Abuse And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few substance abuse experts claim that beer, wine, and liquor advertisements created by the media are a significant by the media are an important reason for the spread of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol dependency consultants claim that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other alcoholism specialists articulate that more than a few of our teenagers engage in alcohol abuse because of the increased tension that they go through.
From a somewhat different vantage point, because both parents in quite a few families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental supervision surely has to play a significant part in the rise in teen alcohol abuse. And last of all, a variety of alcohol dependency experts articulate that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due, at least partially, to our lenient society.
One component of youth alcohol abuse that appears to be somewhat incomplete in the alcohol abuse research literature, on the other hand, is the lack of educational programs that teach teenagers how to improve upon their coping skills so that their hazardous and careless drinking behavior is drastically lessened or eliminated. Stated another way, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect correlation between poor coping skills and abusive and excessive drinking.
In essence, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the rate of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct argument, why isn't coping skills training a key part of the academic prospectus in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?
Let us construct a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which students are trained how to develop sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets demanding, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more creative manner, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.
Stated differently, students who display excellent coping skills will be more able to think clearly and show signs of superior decision making as opposed to teens lack first-rate coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of alcohol abuse.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, moreover, if teens not only got extraordinary coping skills education but also obtained a first-rate education that emphasized the short term and long term negative consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills education, it is advocated, would help students avoid the apparent allure of teenage drinking and, as a consequence, would drastically diminish the excessive drinking behavior displayed by teenagers in our country.
There are positively many valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in an excessive manner. Such a thorny predicament demands an all-inclusive and more applicable response by our educators, students, parents, and politicians so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and responsible way rather than gravitating to hazardous and abusive drinking to solve their difficulties.
